I checked the calendar and yes, apparently it is 2010 but somewhere in Russia they feel that animal torture and cruelty is not only highly amusing but a fine idea for promoting a business enterprise that depends on attracting tourists.
Here is what happened. Some emotionally and morally deficient humans thought it would be a grand idea to attach a terrified donkey to a giant wing/sail affair and to launch him out over the ocean. The shaking, crying, terrified animal was thus sent aloft where his cries could be heard by all who thought they were at the beach to have a relaxing day in the sun. The humans who perpetrated this "prank" were highly pleased with the result, not caring where the donkey might land or even if he would survive the landing. Miraculously, he did.
The film clip of this shameful event can be seen at: http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/07/21/parachuting-donkey-frightens-russian-beachgoers/
Please be warned, it is not for the faint of heart or for anyone who knows and loves donkeys.
In this country the Russian Ambassador can be reached at ambassador@rusembassy.ca
By all means, let him know your thoughts on this act of animal cruelty and how it reflects on the country as a whole. If you live in another country, please direct your thoughts to the Russian Embassy there. We can't turn back time but we can let it be known that in this age of omnipresent cameras, this sort of idiocy will most likely be seen by a world-wide audience.

Sheaffer, I saw a photograph and news article about this, thanks to a reader at camera-obscura who alerted me. Thank you for announcing this, and I agree - it is idiocy.
Billie, we just visited your blog - it seems that the owner of the tortured donkey won't be charged. It hardly seems possible...if this is true then it speaks volumes about the official Russian attitude toward animal abuse. How I wish that poor, tormented donkey could go to PrimRose to live out his days amongst humans who actually care.
Grey Horse Matters, it would seem that prosecution is not on the books for the donkey abusers. What a travesty and what statement it makes about justice for animals in Russia
From what I've read in various places the owner of this poor Donkey "disappeared" with his Donkey, then later turned himself in and presented the Donkey for inspection whereupon it was deemed unharmed and therefore no cruelty charges are to be laid.
Pardon my cynicism, but am I the only one who doubts that the Donkey presented for inspection is the same one who was so callously abused ? If so, one wonders why the disappearing act ????
Gazelle, you share my suspicion and cynicism. The whole affair reeks of cover-up and wanting the thing to be done with. I can only assume this is how animal abuse and cruelty are dealth with in Russia ie: ignored, tolerated and who knows. even tacitly encouraged. Has anyone received an answer to their emails to the Russian embassy? We have not.
This appalling act of cruelty has received a lot of publicity in the UK & one of the "red top" newspapers has apparently set up a campaign to "rescue" the poor donkey.
My cynicism extends to thinking that this will become a profitable export market for Russia, so I have instead emailed the Russian embassy to say that I have cancelled my planned trip to Kiev this autumn & will not spend any of my cash on Russian products in the future.
I hope that if enough people openly state that they will withhold their money, then the impact of this thoughtless act of cruelty will become more apparent to the lumbering State monolith.
Poor donkey. I hope she really is o.k.
the world just seems so full of idiots, morons, and half brained dimwits!!!
I would not expect Russia to bother charging or prosecuting anybody regarding animal cruelty ...but...by the same token....people right here in Canada are getting away with the very same type of thing....every. single. day.
We can't even get a cop or animal control by-law officer to turn his head in the direction of cruelty, neglect or abuse.... I still want a gun, but, it's probably best I don't have one. ....and I will still continue to hire thugs (which by the way only cost $100 most days at one of my favourite places to find tough guys who love animals) to meet out some form of punishment when I find animals being abused.... no point in waiting on political or any other wheels to turn...they haven't turned in years....
Dougie, I fear you may be right in thinking this could be a new business opportunity. The whole incident reeks of human greed and arrogance.
Vee, I share your skepticism regarding a largish part of the human race. I don't suppose you could lend us a thug or two so we can pay a visit to whomever left Annabelle at the auction in such a state of neglect and despair?
Hay Sheaffer - why are people so mean and cruel to equines. This has upset me and mom greatly.
Your fren,
Buddy, I simply cannot fathom it. Or why governments of supposedly civilized countries won't take appropriate action.
