This, That and A Happy Donkey Story

I have been somewhat incommunicado, owing to the revolting and ongoing illness of Herself. She has been in the grips of a plague-like flu for over a week and we have had the great pleasure of seeing much more of the male human. He is a very liberal hand with the foodstuffs and of course presented us with a large container of Stud Muffins on Christmas day.

We saw nothing of the Woman for three days and when she appeared it was not a sight for sore eyes but a sight to make eyes sore. She looks overcooked, underwashed and even worse dressed than usual. Her breathing sounds like a wooden sailing ship in full flight before the storm. She crackles and pops and wheezes, often far too close for a donkey's comfort. I am trying to remain civil but the strain is beginning to tell.

Meanwhile, we have heard that Gazelle, who is my assistant here on the blog, has officially become Simon Donkey's sponsor at the sanctuary. Simon is very pleased to have his own person to see to all his needs and his first move was to acquire a tartan blanket. He and O'Sullivan have been honoured with the gift of Tabi's stall for shelter on cold winter nights and they appear to be suitably awed. O'Sullivan has his own tartan blanket and they look like two old Scottish gentlemen imbibing their bowls of haggis when they go in at feed time. Hard to believe where their lives are now compared to a year ago...

Hope we get photos of those tartan jackets - sounds wonderful!!

Husband has been doing nearly all barn chores for 3 days now, as I too have a nasty cold. I am thankful for the help and hope all of us are back to normal by the new year!

Buddy, if your mom gets sick we will find a way to get down there and feed you if necessary!

You know, now that I think of it, a tartan jacket and a new stall might be just the ticket for ME. I am looking into it.

Buddy, I will request film of the tartan wearers. I'm very pleased that your woman saw fit to make you horse biscuits - I am afraid ours was too revoltingly ill to be of use. Buddy, the thought of no one feeding you for two weeks is too awful - you must make arrangements for emergency food drops if necessary.

Billie, have you secured a new stall for yourself, complete with tartan blanket? The human illnesses going around this year are quite staggering - I should be wearing a mask at all times.

Vee, no danger on the Stud Muffin front. Herself is now back in charge in our barn and the SMs are being dissected into molecular particles before being put in our dinners. She could make a small potato last a family of five for a year.

Oh yes, we must have pics of the Tartan clad Donkeys. Then perhaps we could ask Dougie Donk of Scotland to help identify which Clans that pair have joined. Hopefully not the Hatfields and the McCoys.

Hi Sheaffer,

It was good to hear from you. My human was getting quite concerned when there had been no updates on your blog over Christmas. Usually when Uncle Ed and Winsome Wendy come to visit us the conversation always gets around to you and your family. This year there was nothing to discuss so now your woman is feeling better she had better make up for lost time. I know you will have lots of stories but will your woman in her weakened state be able to put in all the extra hours needed to catch up?

We had our dainty donkey feet trimmed yesterday so we are just flitting about the field showing off our pedicures. Well I least I am flitting. The others are just plodding as uusual!!!

Please no more talk of tartan coats. If the three lady donkeys hear mention of such fashion items they will be requesting custom made blankets with matching handbags!!!!!

Your fan,

Willy

Gazelle, you have just prompted some research on the whole "Hatfield-McCoy" reference. They sound like the equivalent of the Scottish Campbell and MacDonalds; so thanks for broadening my world knowledge :)

Photos of tartan rugs are always welcome - my own this year is a sort've muted Black Watch pattern. I rather like it.

Gazelle, Jack is very taken with the idea of a backwoods feud breaking out at the "sandcherry". I have requested photos and we shall be able to see how the two sides are lining up.

Willy, service around here has been simply shocking over the last week. Not to mention that every time I see Herself, she begins coughing loudly directly into my face. I would be very careful of letting your donkey ladies have handbags - who knows what they could do with those things.

Dougie, Black Watch, eh? Sounds very stylish and Highland-y. I would expect no less from a Beau Brummel amongst donkeys...

Hay Sheaffer - its COLD here in the desert today - high of 35 - low tonight 10 degrees - brrrrr. Mom put on my heavy winter blankie tonight - good thing - with the wind and possible snow showers later - I'm really gonna need it.

Stay warm my fren,

Buddy, I think we must have your weather for the next two days - warm and everything icy melting...try to get yourself into the house. Thank you for my very handsome Christmas card - it was a wonderful surprise.
