Mirage

I looked out the door this morning and beheld a desert paradise. There was sand as far as the eye could see, trees with Stud Muffins suspended from every branch, and low tables with all sorts of edibles. There was a small pond of cool water for drinking and a platoon of quiet, service-oriented humans to see to our every need. Handel's Water Music gently wafted through the air (I know - an ironic choice for a desert-loving donkey, but there you have it). I sighed deeply with the greatest pleasure and set my foot out the door...

I came to with a terrible jolt. Herself was peering at me over the stall guard and asking if I was feeling quite sane and telling me to get myself out the door. Tragically, it had all been but a dream. By mid-morning a raw day had turned into a hideous spring blizzard, complete with flying ice pellets and slushy snow. I huddled in a corner of the run-in for the day. Molly stomped in and out, never quite settling but managing to rouse me whenever I slipped into a reverie of escape.

Herself gave us extra tidbits in our dinners but we do not care for the new vitamin/mineral supplement she has put us on. She tries to disguise but it remains the elephant in the room. It is brown, gritty and odoriferous. I carefully seperate the powder and leave it discarded in the bottom of the bowl. It is causing the Woman considerable consternation so at least that is a bright spot in a bleak season. I want sugary, oaty, molassesy food, not something that came out of an abandoned mine shaft.

Sheaffer, get back to your mirage as soon as you can. That sounds like the very best and smartest way to manage what sounds like a brutal winter for you and yours.

Rafer Johnson was pouting yesterday because we had a big rain and thunderstorm. Redford seems to not mind a little rain and will march around in it. I suspect he pretends he is bossing it around!

billie, I'm trying to keep myself firmly planted in this mirage but keep being rudely awakened by poltroons of all species. I know how Redford feels about the rain - I would like to boss around some weather myself.

Oh Sheaffer - I was so hoping spring was on its way to your place - so sorry it hasn't arrived yet. Soon my fren - soon!

Beautiful day here in the desert - but no stud muffins hanging on the trees - darn it.

Your fren,

Hi Sheaffer,

Sorry I have been out of touch for a while but I having been training to become a medical practitioner. I have been very busy overseeing the soaking and poulticing of abscesses. At the moment, my Dutch Warmblood friend has an abscess that refuses to drain so I have to help him though his morning routine.

Worse than that, my mom Bert has had recurring problems with her "waterworks" She is on medication twice a day so I also help administer that. Since the medication is mixed with honey I must make sure not a drop is wasted. I have a few bit of sticky on my face as sometimes I get a little enthusicatic with my care.

The weather here is sloppy. We have about 4 inches of snow but it is slushy and everything, including we poor donkeys, is soaking wet.

Spring sunshine where are you????

Your Fan,

Willy

At first I thought perhaps a wind/sand storm..but, I was sure there must still be some snow or totally soggy earth...couldn't figure it out...til you mentioned lovely muffins suspended from the branches...ahhahah....it was then I knew you were totally hallucinating.

She's gonna have to break down soon Sheaffer and bake you some of those yummy molasses-y stud muffins.... to hide the odoriferous supplements....

stay warm little buddy...

Buddy, you must console yourself with the occasional apricot! This whole long winter business is frankly becoming tedious. Have a roll in the sand for me...

Willy, you brave lad! By the time things have settled you will be fully qualified to serve at the front as a medic in case of armed conflict.I hope your poor mother is feeling somewhat improved in the waterworks department? It sounds dreadful. I blame all of this on the winter that won't leave.
