A Festive Update Times Two

Last week the woman strong armed Violet into the portable cat prison and hauled her off to the vet, howling and screaming, for her annual stabbing with needles. They both returned looking hot and flustered; Violet has been shunning Herself ever since. Can't say I blame her.

While they were there the woman received an update on the two tiny kittens who were thrown into the ditch at the end of our drive a year ago. Some of you may remember that it took much searching in a blizzard but the brothers were found, starving, flea-ridden and terrified. The magnificent Alison, who works at the vet clinic, found them homes with a couple of humans who had just lost their ancient and beloved cat brothers.

Well, a year later the young brothers are running (ruling actually) the household with an iron paw. They have grown into magnificent feline specimens and lead a life of luxury and leisure. They remain devoted to each other and are never to be found far apart. They were a whisker away from dying of exposure in a dark and hostile environment because a human decided they were worthless and tossed them out of a moving vehicle. Thanks to the powers that run the universe, there are other humans like Alison.

Alison has sent me some photos of the boys at home. I thought it would be a fitting start to the festive season to share them with you.

oh, what beautiful twins they are indeed!! I'm happy they are doing so well....

you're glad you are not here...we are going down to -28 C tonight...we had some high winds over the weekend...and if your stall was in my patio...I think I may be able to just...and barely just...see the tips of your ears! It swirled and drifted off the rooftop straight into the patio! terrible lot of shoveling... stay warm over there....

Love the photos of the brothers - what a blessing they found their home and live so happily now.

Stay warm and dry.

We're still ankle deep in mud in some spots but two days of sunshine are helping. More rain tonight, though.

The only thing worse than mud... frozen mud. At least we're not there yet!

Good morning Sheaffer:

Thanks for the pictures of the boys - clearly they're flourishing in their new home. Both my cats (Daisy and Maggie) are rescue cats, and like yourself, I'm shocked at how some humans can be so careless with small, fragile lives.

DaisyCat was abandoned on the streets of the South Valley - and without claws, too, so things got very lean for her before a kind couple started feeding her and put out an email here at the University looking for her forever home (which turned out to be mine!). Maggie, on the other paw, was surrendered to the local rescue shelter by her former humans (apparently Maggie didn't take to their new micro-human), and I adopted her a few days later, so she's under the impression that SHE rescued ME, rather than the other way around - an illusion I'm happy to support. They're getting along famously, though - Maggie has adjusted to her new home splendidly since joining our ongoing festivities in late September.

We're having our first rip-roaring winter storm here in New Mexico; thunder and lightning accompanying the snow howling down from the mountains, 60 mph gusts of wind, and it was like Bumper Cars on the highways this morning, cars spinning and sliding around in all directions. In typical NM fashion, though, they're predicting sunny skies by the drive home and dry pavement by tomorrow morning. Never a dull moment in the Land of Enchantment!

Hope you're warm and dry in your little nest up north...

Hay Sheaffer - I woked up this morning and there was SNOW - not alot - about a inch - oh it was so much fun to run and slip and slide - scared the you know what our of mom when she came out to feed me. She covered her eyes just knowing I was gonna slip and fall - so I kept on doing it. She feed me and I stopped. Oh this snow is wonderful. Its all gone now - can't wait for more.

Sally, we were very happy to receive news of the "Blizzard Brothers" - how much their life has changed! I have studied the weather map for the continent and it seems to be horrid from south to north and west to east. There is no respite from the fury and malice of winter.

Oh BumbleVee, our blizzard is just getting underway. You have brought up my worst fear - snow so deep I must navigate by the tips of my ears only. I suppose I could move up on the roof if they made me a heated penthouse...

billie, you have sunshine? Really? So that's where it's gone. I hope your cats are all high and dry and safe from mud fever.

Christina SVG, we loved the story of your two felines. Very much like ours; one is utterly grateful for being rescued (Sally) and the other does us the favour of living amongst us (Violet). My condolences on your state of blizzard - but at least it seems to leave as quickly as it blows in. Our winter is like the dreadful guest who can't take a hint. It slouches off sometime in late April/ early May, firing parting shots of frozen precipitation.

Buddy, be careful - snow is a dangerous substance! It would be horrible to hear you were laid up in traction with your leg suspended in the air by a pulley system.

what a happy ending... here at our place we have a brother/sister that were brought to my animal hospital at 18 months of age and we were told "they don't like people and i can't find anyone to take them... can you euthanize them"... so fred and ethel now reside with me... they were a feral litter and prefer the outdoors.. but if i sit outside with my coffee ethel will sit in my lap and share it with me. they are quite affectionate and happy playful cats who deserve to be alive!!!!!!!!

Marie, I do love a good cat story with a happy ending. Thank you for sharing that. We donkeys are tremendous cat admirers and I feel Jack and I would be excellent at running a cat shelter. We wash Sally every day and make sure she is kept safe from visiting canines. Fred and Ethel are living the life all cats deserve and which unfortunately many do not have.

I am delighted with the photos of the Blizzard Brothers, who look like they appreciate that life can be most kind.

My woman informs me that we also have a new feline, who was dumped by unfeeling people on Guy Fawkes Night. I have not yet made friends with "Suki" as she has yet to be vaccinated, but we have exchanged looks through the kitchen window. She is a very fetching orange & white.

I am looking forward to emulating your bathing of Sally & hope she will be more appreciative than Theo the miniature panther. He know some very bad words!

Hay Billie - we have frozen mud here - a little snow left on the ground but lots of frozen mud. Its hard the the ole hoofies.

Dougie, good work on the cat front. Every one we save is another that doesn't suffer or meet an untimely end. I wonder, do you think we should open a worldwide chain of donkey-run cat laundries? I haven't met a donkey who doesn't appreciate cats and given our attention to detail, I think we would be excellent cat launderers.

Buddy, take care with that frozen mud!

The high winds yesterday basically dried things out enough that it's not so wet. So the mud is now... a sort of moist, cake-like earth.

Which will undergo a hard freeze tonight.

Crazy weather down south lately!

Marie,
as the president of the Jack Kevorkian club here in the U S, I suggest that there are a few humans that are in dire need of some euthanasia compounds.. like the prior owners of the two cats that you seem to appreciate and adore.. we have a feral cat that we rescued from under a porch in a city near here, and she is the best hunter I have ever seen, and loves to be patted and messed over..
keep up the good work,
Mr Gale
